- It has been observed that individuals that take proton pump inhibitors for extended periods of time are at increased risk of bone fractures.
- Proton pump inhibitors might increase your risk of clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD).
- You may experience low levels of magnesium if you take Protonix or another PPI.
- Women who are taking Protonix should avoid nursing, as it is not known whether or not this drug is passed through breast milk.
Protonix Treatment and Use
Protonix | pantoprazole is a member of a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (ppi’s) and is used to treat erosive esophagitis as well as other conditions that involve an excess of stomach acid. Protonix is currently marketed by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.
Protonix | pantoprazole is a PPI and works by blocking the acid producing areas of the stomach, thereby decreasing the amount of acid that your stomach produces.
Protonix dosage
Protonix | pantaprazole ppi comes as a delayed-released tablet and is indicated for adults for up to 8 weeks of treatment. The safety of treatment with Protonix beyond 8 weeks has not been established. The safety of using this drug on children has not been established.
- For treatment of erosive esophagitis associated with GERD, the recommended adult dose is 40 mg once a day for up to 8 weeks.
- For maintenance therapy of the healing of erosive espophagitis, the recommended adult dose is 40 mg a day.
- For the treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions like Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, the recommended adult dose is 40 mg, twice daily.
