Tiazac | Diltiazem has certain adverse side effects associated with it, such as:
- Cardiovascular side effects such as heart failure, heart block and heart attacks

Tiazac | Diltiazem has more common and less severe adverse side effects, such as:
- Cardiovascular side effects such as bradycardia, or abnormally slow heart rate and peripheral edema, or swelling of the tissues due to fluid accumulation

Contraindications
The following contraindications impede a patient’s ability to be prescribed
Tiazac | Diltiazem. These include:
- Administration of IV beta-blockers within a few hours of Tiazac | Diltiazem administration
- Atrial fibrillation
- Atrial flutter
- Cardiogenic shock
- 2nd or 3rd degree atrioventricular heart block without a functioning pacemaker
- Hypersensitivity to Tiazac | Diltiazem
- Symptomatic hypotension
- Should NOT be given to newborns
- Sick sinus syndrome without a functioning ventricular pacemaker
- Ventricular tachycardia
Who Should Not Take This Drug
Tiazac | Diltiazem should never be given to the following patients with these preexisting conditions. They include:
- Concurrent administration with drugs known to decrease peripheral resistance, myocardial contractility or conduction and intravascular volume
- Concurrent administration with beta blockers or digitalis
- Patients with hepatic (liver) impairments
- Patients with hypotension
- Patients with renal (kidney) impairments
- Patients with supraventricular arrhythmias with hemodynamic compromise
- Patients with impaired ventricular function

Tiazac | Diltiazem is a prescription that’s meant to be used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris and certain types of arrhythmias. The classification of this drug is that of a calcium channel blocker. It is worth noting that Tiazac | Diltiazem is also used as preventative medicine for migraines.

How This Drug Works
The mechanism of action for Tiazac | Diltiazem is that it works as a slow calcium channel blocker which impedes calcium ion influx while interacting with cardiac and vascular smooth muscle. It is also known to decrease peripheral vascular resistance and causes vascular smooth muscle to relax which results in a decrease of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, thereby alleviating the patient of the symptoms of hypertension.
