Topamax Treatment and Use
Topamax | topiramate, is an anti-seizure medication that is also used to prevent migraine headaches, but doesn’t treat the pain associated with migraines. No one really knows for sure how this medication stops migraines or suppresses seizures, though it is believed that Topamax calms overly excitable brain cells from sending out the signals that cause these complications.
Off-label, Topamax is used for bipolar disorder, eating disorders, weight loss, and alcoholism.
Topamax Dosage
Your doctor will take many things into account before beginning you on a Topamax treatment regimen. This will include your age, the condition being treated, your weight, and other factors.
For migraines, the recommended Topamax dosage is 50 mg, twice a day. For seizure disorder, the Topamax dosage is 200 mg, twice daily. It is recommended that the dose be started much lower and gradually increased to avoid adverse Topamax side effects.
