Zaroxolyn | Metolazone is a diuretic, or water pill, that is used to control high blood pressure and treat water retention caused by various ailments. It may also be used as a treatment for diabetes insipidus and a preventative treatment for kidney stones for patients with high calcium levels. It is also sometimes used to decrease certain symptoms like trouble breathing.
How does Zaroxolyn work?
Zaroxolyn encourages your kidneys to get rid of excess water and sodium and increases your body’s urine production. It inhibits the liver’s ability to reabsorb electrolytes, so sodium is discharges in a more normalized manner. This also prevents edema, or fluid retention in patients with congestive heart failure, or kidney disorders.
Zaroxolyn Dosage Information
This tablet medication is typically taken once daily in the morning. Food does not affect Zaroxolyn, so it may be taken with or without a meal. Taking this medication later in the day may disrupt your sleeping patterns by causing you to wake up to urinate.
To achieve the best results, Zaroxolyn should be taken regularly, even if you you feel fine. Blood pressure improvement may take up to six weeks.
When taking Zaroxolyn, your doctor may ask you to exercise and take part in a diet low in sodium but rich in potassium.
