Byetta Found to Cause Kidney Problems

byetta injection and kidney problemsIncretin mimetic medication Byetta is prescribed to type-2 diabetes patients along with a lengthy list of adverse side effects. Known for its supposedly cancer-causing attributes, doctors have found that Byetta may also lead to kidney problems. By November 9, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had opted for a revision in Byetta warning labels to include information about renal (kidney) reactions.

FDA Studies Byetta’s Effect on the Kidney

A shocking 78 cases of kidney problems related to Byetta had been reported to the FDA from April of 2005 to October of 2008.  The reports indicated that 71 patients were hospitalized, 18 cases called for dialysis, and 2 required kidney transplants. The FDA was notified that four of these cases also resulted in death.

These reports obliged officials to adjust warning labels to highlight the potential for kidney problems including kidney dysfunction or kidney failure. In 2009 the FDA required the following changes by manufacturers:

  • include further warnings of the risk of decrease in kidney function, developing kidney problems or kidney failure ,and urging patients with kidney problems not to use Byetta as a treatment
  • encourage doctors to prescribe Byetta with discretion, while caution increase in treatment doses
  • recommend that doctors vigilantly monitor the kidney function of patients who utilize Byetta as a therapy
  • ensure that patients are fully aware of the benefits and risks of receiving Byetta as a treatment

Byetta Kidney Failure Lawsuits

With over 7 million persons prescribed this incretin mimetic injection, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration assures the public that adverse kidney reactions affect only a small percentage of patients receiving Byetta. Lawsuits against Byetta side effects began in 2007 for a failure of companies to properly warn patients of severe risks. Byetta and other incretin mimetics are currently under investigation for their potential to cause severe complications such kidney damage, pancreatitis, and certain cancers.
