Mirena Lawsuits Filed Against Bayer Company

Mirena, a contraceptive manufactured by the Bayer Company, is an intrauterine device (IUD) used to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years. Recently, there have been many lawsuits filed against Mirena due to claims that its adverse side effects have been understated.

In 2009, the FDA sent a letter to Bayer Company regarding concerns that advertising for Mirena  “overstates the efficacy of Mirena, presents unsubstantiated claims, minimizes the risks of using Mirena, and includes false or misleading presentations regarding Mirena. Thus, the program misbrands the drug in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.”

While Mirena has been advertised as a safe, effective and convenient form of birth control, some users have described their experience with the device a “nightmare.” Many of the complaints include symptoms such as:mirena side effects

  • Decreased libido
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Mood and mental changes such as mood swings, irritability, anxiety, insomnia and depression
  • Hair loss
  • Pain or cramps
  • Long-term spotting, vaginal discharge with a foul odor
  • Chest pains, increased heart rate
  • Malaise
  • Dizziness or weakness
  • Pelvic infections
  • Infertility

Despite thousands of complaints by users of Mirena for serious complications and injuries, the FDA has refused to issue a recall or any alerts or warnings. This is why many of Mirena’s victims have taken matters into their own hands, filing lawsuits against this dangerous contraceptive.

In a recent case, filed May 2, a New York woman claimed the device had migrated to her pelvis a few months after it had been implanted. This case is only one of many filed with similar allegations. Because of this, the New Jersey Supreme Court decided to consolidate Mirena lawsuits into a multicounty litigation on May 24.
