Recently the FDA in a public notification, urged consumers not to purchase or ingest X-Rock, a male sexual enhancement supplement manufactured by CRM Laboratories. The X-Rock packaging falsely asserts that the supplement is “all natural” and lists herbal ingredients such as ginseng and horney goat weed, leaving out the fact that it contains sildenafil and hydroxythiohomosildenafil, the active ingredients in the impotence drug Viagra.
Sildenafil and hydroxythiohomosildenafil (an analog of sildenafil) are known to affect blood pressure and interact negatively with nitrates, drugs given to patients with heart problems like angina pectoris. Both nitrates and Sildenafil cause blood pressure to drop. Taken together they can cause a dramatic plunge in blood pressure. As of 1998, Viagra has accounted for 143 deaths in the United States, 16 of which were patients taking both Viagra and a nitrate simultaneously.
There has been a growing trend in body-building, weight loss, and sexual enhancement pills being billed as all-natural when in fact they contain very powerful medications usually relegated to prescrip
tion only drugs. “Safe,” “herbal,” and “100% natural” are some of the slogans used to draw customers who might normally steer clear of such drugs if they knew what the actual list of ingredients consisted of.
People who currently possess X-Rock are encouraged to throw it away and to report immediately to a medical professional if they begin to exhibit any adverse symptoms. It should be added that if you are considering taking any of these popular supplements, extreme caution should be exercised. They have not been evaluated by the FDA and often leave out ingredients that may cause bodily harm.
