Yasmin, Yaz Linked to Deaths in Canada

Yaz birth control lawsuits are gaining momentum as more women are developing severe cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Bayer, Yasmin/Yaz manufacturer, has agreed to settle 6,760 U.S. blood clot claims for a total of $1.4 billion and is now being held accountable for 23 deaths in Canada.

From menstrual cramps to blood clots

legs affected by dvt- yaz and dvtYaz (Drospirenone/ Ethinyl Estradiol) was one of the many birth control pills prescribed to women as a contraceptive, acne reducer, and treatment for premenstrual dysmorphic disorder (PMDD). Adverse side effects among patients initially included numbness, nausea, vaginal itching, and depression. Drospirenone, the synthetic hormone found in a number of birth control pills, increases the risk of developing blood clots which can result in venous thromboembolism (VTE/DVT). As a result of misleading marketing and understating the adverse side effects associated with this pill, the FDA has ordered Bayer to include Yaz’s increased blood clot risk on its label.

Casualties in Canada

Health Canada has reported the fatalities of 23 Canadian women who were using Yasmin or Yaz. The victims, between the ages of 14 and 26, suffered from different side effects including pulmonary embolisms, DVT, and heart attack. These casualties are among an estimated 330 cases of patients experiencing adverse effects from Yaz and are seeking legal action against Bayer for continuing to emphasize the benefits of the pill rather than the risks associated with its use.

Bayer is facing similar lawsuits in the U.S.; the most recent was filed by four women in California who have suffered from DVT. As of July 2013, Bayer is facing $1.4 billion in U.S. blood clot settlements. Despite consumer fatalities and warnings from the FDA, the pharmaceutical giant remains confident that their contraceptives are “safe, effective and have a favorable benefit-risk profile”.
