- Aldactone is a known tumorigen, and may cause certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer.
- Aldactone has been shown to cause rare but serious skin conditions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. If you notice any unusual blistering, hives, lesions, facial swelling, or red or purple colored rashes accompanied with join pain, fever, stomach hemorrhage, or eye discomfort, talk to your doctor at once.
- Levels of potassium in the blood may become too high while taking this medication, and can cause sudden muscle weakness or tingling feeling, as well as sudden nausea with or without fatigue.

Aldactone General Warnings
Aldactone has received an FDA Category C warning, and should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding until a doctor has been consulted. It is unknown if this medication can harm an unborn baby, or if it can be passed through breastmilk to a nursing child.
Aldactone should not be used with NSAID, ACE inhibitor, or lithium medications due to the increased risk for certain side effects or conditions. If you are using any other medications while taking Aldactone, consult your doctor before combining these drugs as they may cause dangerous interactions.
This medication may result in a fluid imbalance that can cause dangerous symptoms in patients who have a history of liver disease.

Aldactone | Spironolactone is an aldosterone receptor antagonist diuretic indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:
- Hyperaldosteronism, which is the overproduction of the hormone aldosterone that results in low potassium levels in the blood.
- Fluid retention, or edema, caused by heart, kidney, or liver disease.
- High blood pressure, when used alone or in combination with other medications.
Aldactone has also been prescribed for the off-label treatment of acne in women who suffer from hormone disorders.
How does Aldactone work?
Aldactone works as a diuretic, and signals the kidneys to express excess salt from the body through urination. Aldactone also balances the production of aldosterone, a naturally-produced hormone that regulates sodium and water levels in the body.
Aldactone Dosing Instructions
The dosage of Aldactone that a patient is prescribed is dependent on the condition being treated. Aldactone should be taken at the same time each day to ensure effectiveness and to prevent any imbalances of this drug in the body.
High Blood Pressure
- Starting dose of 50 to 100 mg daily, either in a single dose or divided
- Adjustments to dosage may be made after 2 weeks, with a maximum dose not to exceed 400 mg daily
Aldosteronism
- Starting dose of 100 to 400 mg daily
- Maximum dosage of 400 mg daily
Edema
- Heart Failure: starting dose of 100 mg daily, single or divided doses; adjustments to dosage may be made after 5 days
- Kidney Failure: starting dose of 100 mg daily, single or divided doses; adjustments to dosage or the addition of another diuretic medication may be made after 5 days
