Asacol Treatment and Use
Asacol | mesalazine is an anti inflammatory drug marketed by Warner Chilcott Company LLC. Asocol and Asocol HD are indicated for the treatment of flares in patients with mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis.
Asacol is used to treat mildly active ulcerative colitis and Asocol HD is used for moderately active ulcerative colitis.
One of the benefits of Asacol | mesalazineis that it acts primarily in the gut and as such has very few system wide side effects.
How does it work?
Asocol is a bowel-specific aminosalicylate drug that inhibits the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, two chemicals that lead to the flare ups that plague sufferers of ulcerative colitis.
Asacol dosing
You may take this medication with or without food.
For the treatment of mild flare ups, two 400 mg (800 mg) tablets of Aricept are to be given three times a day (total of 2400 mg) for six weeks. After this time, the dosage will be dropped to two 400 mg (800 mg) tablets of Aricept to be given twice daily.
For the treatment of moderate flare ups, two 800 mg (1600) tablets of Aricept HD are to be given three times a day (total of 4800 mg per day). Asacol HD is only approved for short term use (six weeks). Studies on long term usage of this drug have not been conducted.
