Avastin Side Effects
Avastin | bevacizumab side effects and adverse reactions include:
- Changes in taste
- Rectal bleeding
- Dry skin
- Back pain
- Skin inflammation
- Nasal inflammation
- Headache
- Increased urine protein
Less common, though more serious Avastin side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal (GI) perforation
- Bleeding in the stomach, brain, spinal cord, or vagina. If you have had any previous issues with bleeding or coughing up blood, avoid taking Avastin.
- Blood clots
- Stroke
- Severely high blood pressure
- Difficulty breathing
- Sweating
- Chest pain
- Fertility impairment in women
Warnings & Recalls for Avastin
- Blood pressure should be monitored every 2 to 3 weeks while being treated with Avastin and even after discontinuing the drug.
- Tell your healthcare provider before you take Avastin if you have had a history of cardiovascular disease, allergies, infections, or kidney disease. This medication may aggravate these pre-existing conditions.
- Avastin may cause gastrointestinal perforation. I you have any of the following symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately: constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, fever.
- If you are going to undergo surgery, make sure to stop taking Avastin at least 28 days beforehand. Wait at least 28 days after wounds have completely healed to begin treatment again with Avastin.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning on becoming pregnant. Avastin is a class C medication that may not be safe for pregnant women to use.
Avastin Treatment and Use
Avastin | bevacizumab infusion is an anti-angiogenic agent marketed by Genentech USA, Inc. that is given either intrevenously or through a small port. It blocks the overproduction of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEG), a substance that may promote the growth of new blood vessels in tumors that aid in tumor formation.
Avastin infusion is indicated for treatment of the following:
- Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) when given in either the first or second intravenous 5-FU-based chemotherapy for metastatic cancer.
- Advanced nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) together with carboplatin and paclitaxel in those who have not been treated with chemotherapy.
- Metastatic kidney canger (mRCC) when used with interferon alfa.
- Glioblastoma (GBM), a type of brain tumor, in adults who were unsuccessful in treating their disease previously.
Off-label, Avastin | bevacizumab is used to treat certain eye illnesses. Injection of 1.25 mg–2.5 mg of bevacizumab into the vitreous cavity has been used by opthamologists to treat neovascular eye disease.
Avastin Infusion Treatment
While undergoing treatment with Avastin infusion your physician or nurse will check or signs of an infusion reaction. These include:
- Severe hypertension
- Breathing difficulties
- Diminished oxygen levels in red blood cells
- Allergic reaction
- Chest pain
- Tremors
- Headache
- Excessive sweating
