Avonex | interferon beta-1a is an immunomodulator manufactured by Biogen Idec. as a subcutaneous injection. It is uncertain exactly how Avonex works, but it is used to prevent the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS).
Avonex | interferon beta-1a has been approved for the prevention of outbreaks of MS symptoms. Avonex has also been used to slow the growth of disabilities that occur with the progression of multiple sclerosis, such as
- weakness
- numbness
- loss of muscle coordination
- vision, speech, or bladder control problems
Avonex has not been proven effective in the treatment of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis, and is not a cure for multiple sclerosis; it has only been shown to diminish the frequency of symptoms and their relapse.
