Benicar carries with it a black box warning due to its potential for miscarriage and severe birth defects. Benicar Treatment and Use
Benicar | olmesartan medoxamil is a Daiichi-Sankyo drug used to treat hypertension either alone or in combination with other drugs in children one year of age or older as well as adults. It is part of a class of drugs called angiostensin II receptor antagonists. Benicar works by keeping blood vessels from becoming narrow. This improves blood flow and works to reduce blood pressure.
How does Benicar work?
Benicar | olmesartan blocks angiotensin II receptors which decreases the function of the chemical angiotensin II which causes blood vessels to narrow. This keeps blood vessels relaxed and lowers blood pressure.
Benicar dosing
Benicar comes as a coated tablet. Though individual dosage needs may vary, the usual starting dose for Benicar is 20 mg once a day. Your doctor will take many things into consideration before prescribing your individual dose of Benicar.
- The maximum dose administered is 40 mg.
- You should take your dose of Benicar once daily with or without food.
- Benicar is generally considered safe to take with other agents used to counter hypertension.
