Severe Side Effects of Biaxin
- Hives, shortness of breath and swelling in the mouth, lips, face, tongue, throat, arms or legs may be indications of a serious allergic reaction.
- Tell your doctor about any eye irritation, sore throat, bloody or watery diarrhea, chest pain, heartburn or hearing problems you may experience.
- High fever, irregular heartbeats and blistering or peeling skin may also occur. These conditions are severe and require immediate medical attention.
- Biaxin may also cause liver problems. Tell your doctor right away if you have nausea, intense stomach pain, loss of appetite, bloody or discolored stools, dark urine or jaundice.

- Headaches, upset stomach, vomiting and tooth discoloration are common side effects of Biaxin. Females may experience vaginal itching or yeast infections. Tell your doctor if these symptoms worsen or do not go away.

General Warnings About Biaxin
- Before taking Biaxin, tell your doctor about any allergies you may have.
- Before taking Biaxin, tell your doctor about any medications you are using. You should not use Biaxin if you are also taking Propulsid | cisapride or Orap | pimozide. Also avoid taking any ergot medicines. When used with Biaxin, these drugs can cause life-threatening heart problems.
- Do not take Biaxin if you have ever suffered from jaundice, kidney problems, liver problems, an electrolyte imbalance (caused by potassium or magnesium deficiency in your blood), myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disorder that causes muscle weakness) or porphyria.
- Continue to use Biaxin even if your symptoms appear to have cleared. If you prematurely discontinue your dosages, the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics before your infection is completely treated.
- Before taking Biaxin, females should tell their doctors if they are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant.
Biaxin Treatment and Use
Biaxin | Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that treats a variety of bacterial infections. It also treats stomach ulcers when taken with other medications. It only treats bacterial infections and should not be prescribed for viral infections like influenza or the common cold. Biaxin is marketed by Abbott Laboratories and was approved for use by the FDA in 1991.
How does Biaxin work?
Biaxin works by preventing the growth and development of bacteria.
Dosage
- Biaxin is taken by mouth and comes as a regular 500 milligram tablet, 250 or 500 milligram extended-release tablets or liquid form. Take it for one to two weeks, or as long as prescribed by your doctor.
- The regular tablet and liquid form are taken with or without food every 12 hours. The extended-release tablets are taken with food once per day. Remember to drink a full glass of water (at least eight fluid ounces) with Biaxin. Do not crush or chew the extended-release tablets before you swallow them.
- Continue to use Biaxin even if your symptoms appear to have cleared. If you prematurely discontinue your dosages, the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics before your infection is completely treated.
