Recall Status
Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories withdrew Duract from the market after reports came in about the drug causing severe liver failure in patients who used the medication for longer than 10 days.
Family Planning Warnings
The FDA assigned Duract as category C. Duract is only recmommneded for use when the risk is outweighed by the benefit. Duract should be avoided during late pregnancy (last trimester) because the drug can delay parturition or cause premature colosure of the doctus arteriosus.It is unknown if this medication passes through breast milk and therefore nursing mothers should consult a physician before using this drug.
General Warnings
- Patients should inform their doctor of any history of liver or kidney disease, any blood disorders, heart disease, frequent alcohol use, ulders, high blood pressure, asthma or eye diseases.
- This drug may cause extreme tiredness and therefore patients should exert caution when taking this medication while performing activities that require alertness.
- Alcohol use should be limited as it may cause an increase in intestinal and stomach bleeding.
- Duract can increase the patient's sensitivity to sunlight and therefore patients should avoid sun exposure and wear protective clothing and sunscreen.
- This drug should be used with extreme caution in the elderly.
Interactions
Patients should inform their doctors about all of the drugs they may be taking. Aspirin should not be taken useless a doctor is consulted. Patients should check the ingredients of nonprescription medications since many formulas contain aspirin. Patients should not start or stop the use any medicine without proper approval from a doctor.Other interactions include:
- warfarin, cimetidine, corticosteroids
- high blood pressure medications
- lithium, phenytoin, arthritis medications
- methotrexate
Duract Treatment and Use
Duract | Bromfenac is an anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. The drug was withdrawn from the U.S. market due to safety and effective problems. Duract is most effective in relieving menstrual pain and is used for short-term pain relief.
Dosage Information
Duract is taken orally. The drug should be taken 6 to 8 hours between the last use. The medication should also be taken with 6 to 8 ounces of water. After taking the drug, patients should not lie down for 30 minutes.
Duract should not be taken with high-fat meals, which may cause the drug to not work properly.
Patients should contact their local poison control center if an overdose is suspected.
If a dose is missed, then patients need to take Duract as soon as they remember. However, it should not be taken if it is almost time for the next dose.
