Epzicom Side Effects
The most commonly
reported adverse reactions of at least moderate intensity:
- drug hypersensitivity
- insomnia
- depression/depressed mood
- headache/migraine
- fatigue/malaise,
- dizziness/vertigo
- nausea
- diarrhea
There have been reported fatalities from this drug as a result of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient of
Abacavir.
Warnings & Recalls for Epzicom
- Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you’ve ever had kidney or liver disease.
- Be sure to tell your doctor if you've ever taken Epzicom, Trizivir or Ziagen in the past. If you stopped these medications in the past because of an allergic reaction, you should not take Epzicom or any medication that contains Ziagen.
There is a “black box” warning associated with this drug as there have been sometimes fatal hypersensitivity reactions with
Abacavir.
Epzicom Treatment and Use
Epzicom | Abacavir/Lamivudine is a drug combination that’s used for the treatment of HIV. In the US, Epzicom is marketed by ViiV Healthcare and was approved by the FDA on August 2, 2004. Its known as a fixed dose combination of Lamivudine and Abacavir, drugs that are both nucleoside transcriptase inhibitors, or NRTIs. Lamivudine is the clinical term for Epivir and Abacavir is the clinical term for Ziagen.
Epzicom prevents HIV from changing genetic material of healthy and functioning CD4 cells which in turn prevents the cells from producing new virus thus decreasing the amount of HIV virus in the body. This drug form ratio is 600 mg of Abacavir and 300 mg of Lamivudine. Epzicom must be used in conjunction with at least one other HIV drug, usually a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) or protease inhibitor. Epzicom comes in the form of a tablet.
