Erbitux | cetuximab injection has earned a Black Box Warning for its risk of allergic reaction during the infusion period, as well as its risk for cardiopulmonary attacks, such as heart attack. Although the incidence of these side effects is low, doctors must still closely monitor patients' reactions to the medication.Erbitux has also received a Class C pregnancy label and should not be used if a patient is pregnant or breastfeeding. The side effects on an unborn child are unknown, and physicians are unsure what risks Erbitux could pose through breast milk transfer.
Erbitux Treatment and Use
Erbitux | cetuximab injection comes from a class of medication known as monoclonal antibodies which works to stop the growth of cancerous cells, and prevents them from spreading throughout the body. Erbitux is used with or without radiation therapy to treat cancer of the head and neck, and can also be used with chemotherapy and other medication to treat colorectal cancer.
Erbitux comes as a solution that must be slowly introduced into the body through vein infusion. It is recommended as a weekly dose, after the initial dose has been issued.
