Serious Side Effects of Felbatol
- abnormal paleness of skin, feeling weak and unusual bruising and bleeding, especially nosebleeds or bleeding from the gums
- temperature of 100° Farenheit or greater (fever), chills, aching and other flu-like symptoms
- rapid heart rate, pounding heartbeats and shortness of breath
- signs of liver damage such as nausea, itchiness, pain in the upper right section of the abdomen, decreased appetite, dark-colored urine, stools that appear clay-colored or pale, and jaundice (yellowed skin or eyes)
- painful urination or a burning sensation while urinating
- trouble balancing or coordinating
- worsening of condition and more frequent seizures
- deppression or thoughts of suicide
- severe allergic reaction: hives, rash, trouble breathing and inflammation of the tongue, throat, mouth or face

Felbatol and Pregnancy
Felbatol is an FDA
pregnancy Category C drug. The effect of Felbatol on an unborn baby when taken by a woman who is pregnant is unknown. Felbatol may be transferred through breast-milk and harm a nursing infant. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before beginning use of Felbatol.
General Warnings
Felbatol
should not be taken by anyone who:
- is allergic to falbamate
- has liver disease
- has ever had a blood cell disorder (especially anemia)
Let your doctor know about any
other medical conditions you have such as kidney disease. Notify your healthcare provider about all medications you are using (particularly other seizure treatments) to avoid interactions.
Felbatol may
decrease the amount of red and white blood cells and platelets in your body, making you more susceptible to bleeding. This may also increase the risk of an infection. Consult your doctor if you have symptoms of a serious infection, weakness or abnormal bleeding.
Felbatol Treatment and Use
Felbatol | Felbamate belongs to a class of medicines called anti-epileptics (anti-convulsants) and is marketed by MedPointe for reducing the occurrences of seizures among patients with epilepsy who are over the age of 18. Felbatol may also be prescribed for children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a type of epilepsy which often results in developmental, psychological and behavioral problems.
Felbatol is generally prescribed to patients who have been unsuccessfully treated with other medications.
How Does Felbatol Work?
Seizures are typically caused by irregular electrical activity and signals within the brain. Although it is not known exactly how Felbatol works, it is thought to balance electrical signals to prevent the onset of seizures.
How to Take Felbatol
Felbatol is available in tablet and oral suspension (liquid) forms to be taken orally. Be sure to shake oral suspension well and use a proper dose-measuring device to fill each dose.
- For treating epilepsy in adults, 1200mg of Felbatol is typically prescribed in divided doses to be taken between 3 and 4 times each day. No more than 3600mg should be taken in 24 hours.
- To treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome dosage amount depends on the patients condition, age, weight and other medications being used. If the patient is using any other medications, these dosages will be decreased to reduce side effects while taking Felbatol.
Use Felbatol as instructed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Felbatol unless your doctor has directed you to do so. Patients taking Felbatol should wear a medical alert tag or ID that gives information of their use of the medication.
