Fentanyl Treatment and Use
Fentanyl is a generic opioid analgesic medication which is manufactured as a transdermal patch, a lozenge, and an injection. Fentanyl works to relieve pain and decrease the emotional response to pain by binding to opiate receptors in the brain and spinal cord. Dopamine levels are increased, resulting in intense, but temporary feelings of relief and euphoria.
Fentanyl is used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Chronic pain
- Pain in patients with cancer who are using another opioid, such as morphine or oxycodone
Fentanyl should only be used for moderate to severe pain, and should not be used to treat mild or short-term pain, such as headaches or back pain.
