Gardasil Treatment and Use
Gardasil | Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine is a drug that’s manufactured and marketed by the drug company Merck & Co., and is a vaccine used for the prevention of certain types of human papilloma virus (HPV), specifically HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. HPV 16 and HPV 18 account for about 70% of all cervical cancers. These strains are also responsible for most HPV-induced vulvar, anal, vaginal as well as penile cancer cases. HPV 6 and HPV 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases.
This drug is not without its controversies due to the requirement in the state of Texas that adolescent girls receive the vaccine. This was bolstered by the fact that the HPV strains that Gardasil protects against are sexually transmitted.
It was approved by the FDA on June 8, 2006 and the FDA recommends vaccination before adolescence and any sort of potential activity in young women.
The active components of Gardasil are:
- Proteins of HPV Types 6, 11, 16, and 18
- Amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate sulfate (adjuvant)
- Yeast protein
- Sodium chloride
- L-histidine
- polysorbate-80
- Sodium borate
Total revenue for Merck & Co. for their Gardasil product in 2010 was about $221 million dollars.
