How Does Hyzaar Work?
Hyzaar works to lower blood pressure through the combined efforts of two medications. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that prevents blood vessels from constricting, while hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic which works to prevent fluid retention by stopping the accumulation of salt in the body.
Hyzaar Dosage Information
The dosage of Hyzaar that a patient receives is individualized based on the effectiveness of the medication, as well as the appearance of side effects. The following dosages and administrations are suggested for the following conditions:
Hypertension
- Typical initial dose of Losartan begins at 50 mg/daily, and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 to 50 mg/daily; doses can of Hyzaar can be given in doses of 12.5 to 25 mg
Severe Hypertension
- Initial dose of one 50/12.5 mg tablet once daily, with an increase to one table of 100/25 mg one daily after 2 -4 weeks if the smaller dose is ineffective

- Treatment should be combined with Cozaar 50 mg/daily; 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide should be added or 50/12.5 Hyzaar should replace Cozaar if initial dosage is ineffective
- if additional treatment is required 100 mg Cozaar and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide or 100/12.5 mg Hyzaar may be used as a replacement
Hyzaar can be taken with or without other antihypertensive medications, and with or without food.
