Ibuprofen is known to cause
serious adverse side effects, such as:
- unexplained weight gain

Warnings & Recalls for Ibuprofen
Black Box Warning
Ibuprofen has received a
black box warning due to the increased risk for patients who take NSAIDs to develop serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, such as heart attacks or stroke, as well as an
increased risk for ulcers, stomach bleeding, and intestinal holes. Patients who are elderly(60 years of age or older), have a history of heart disease, smoke, suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes, or who consume more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day should consult their doctor before taking this medication.
Contraindications of Ibuprofen
Some contraindications before taking
Ibuprofen are:
- Asthma
- Hives
- Allergic reaction following aspirin or other NSAID administration (severe and rarely fatal anaphylactic-like reactions have been reported)
- Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
- Hypersensitivity to Ibuprofen
Some warnings and preexisting conditions that might hinder a patient’s ability to take
Ibuprofen are:
- Risk of severe and potentially fatal bronchospasm with aspirin triad, which can be heightened in asthmatic patients with rhinitis, with or without nasal polyps following aspirin or NSAID administration
- Preexisting asthma which can result in a risk of severe and potentially fatal bronchospasm
- Potential bleeding can occur because Ibuprofen inhibits platelet aggregation
- Concomitant use of ACE inhibitors, thiazides or loop diuretics which can increase risk of renal toxicity or injury
- Concurrent use with oral corticosteroids which increases risk of serious gastrointestinal events
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal or renal injury and anemia may occur with long duration of use
- If the patient is elderly there’s an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events that can occur at any time without warning
- Fluid retention or heart failure (peripheral edema and fluid retention have been reported)
- Preexisting heart failure which leads to an increased risk of renal toxicity and injury
- Preexisting hypertension, fluid retention or congestive heart failure which can lead to new or worsening symptoms of hypertension and cardiovascular events
- Preexisting liver dysfunction which can increase risk of renal toxicity and injury, and increased risk of severe and possibly fatal hepatic reactions
- Lupus erythematosus or related tissue diseases which can result in aseptic meningitis with fever and coma
- Poor general health which can result in increased risk of gastrointestinal injury
- 3rd trimester of pregnancy which can result in premature closure of ductus arteriosus
- Advanced renal disease
- Smoking or alcohol use is potentially fatal with Ibuprofen
