Black Box Warning
Ketek should not be taken by patients with
myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disorder that causes voluntary muscle problems). The drug has caused
respiratory failure and
death in some patients with this disorder.
Other Warnings
- If Ketek causes hepatitis in a patient, then the medication should be discontinued immediately due to risk of needing a liver transplant or death. Liver enzymes should be checked frequently while taking Ketek.
- If Ketek causes visual trouble and/or loss of consciousness, minimize driving and operating heavy machinery.
- Ketek is contraindicated with colchicine, which is a medication prescribed for gout.
- Ketek is a class C pregnancy drug and may be harmful to take during Pregnancy. In lab rats and rabbits, Ketek may have caused stunted growth in offspring.
- Ketek should only be used for bacterial infections. It will work against viral infections.
- Missed doses of Ketek may result in bacterial resistance to the drug.
- Ketek should not be taken with lovastatin or any statin drugs.
Ketek Treatment and Use
Ketek | Telithromycin is an antiobiotic primarily prescribed for pneumonia. It may also be prescribed for other respiratory tract infections and bronchitis. Ketek is marketed by Sanofi-Aventis and was approved for U.S. sale on April 1, 2004.
Between 2001 and 2004, Aventis knowingly falsified data in their drug trials for Ketek. Dr. Anne Marie Kirkman-Campbell was held responsible for the fraudulent trials in her Gadsen, Alabama clinic. She was sentenced to 57 months in prison in 2007.
What does Ketek do?
Ketek helps to eradicate bacteria that causes pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses.
Dosage
Ketek is available as 300 mg and 400 mg tablets. The initial dose for Ketek is 800 mg (or two tablets) once a day. Continue taking this dose for 7-10 days. Do not stop taking Ketek before this time as passed, as this might cause the bacteria to become resistant to the medication.
