Lorcaserin Treatment and Use
Lorcaserin is poised to be the first new weight loss drug marketed in the United States in nearly 13 years. In May of 2012, FDA advisers in an 18-4 vote decided that Arena Pharmaceutical’s Lorcaserin weight loss drug which will be sold under the name Lorquess, had benefits that outweighed health risks.
The FDA panel that convened on May 10, 2012 recommended the much anticipated weight loss drug Lorcaserin with the restrictions that patients being treated with the drug must have a BMI of 30 and above or a BMI of 27 and above with obesity related conditions such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes.
How does Lorcaserin work?
The obesity drug Lorcaserin is what is known as a selective 5-HT2c receptor agonist. What this means is that Lorcaserin activates certain receptors in the brain that then activate the chemical proopiomelanocortin (POMC) which promotes a feeling of fullness. This is believed to be what will ultimately cause weight loss due to the lower overall caloric intake.
