Severe Side Effects of Macrobid
- Macrobid may cause Pancreatitis in some patients.
- Life threatening pulmonary reactions such as fibrosis have occurred in some patients who took Macrobid for extended periods of time.
- Renal failure, diabetes mellitus, and neuropathy (nerve damage) have occured in some patients who took Macrobid.
- Hemolytic anemia may occur in some patients who take Macrobid. In most cases, this stops when the patient stops taking Macrobid.
Common Side Effects of Macrobid
- The most common side effects of Macrobid are upset stomach, headache, and gas.
- Macrobid and other antibiotics may cause diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis).
- Macrobid may also cause dizzy spells, constipation, and yeast infection.
Warnings & Recalls for Macrobid
Warnings
- Do not take antacids with magnesium trisilicate while taking Macrobid.
- Do not take Macrobid with quinolone antibiotics such as Levaquin.
- Elderly patients taking Macrobid are at an increased risk for potentially lethal pulmonary and hepatic reactions. Observe caution if you are over 65 and taking this drug.
- Do not take Macrobid if you have severe or considerable renal impairment.
- Do not take Macrobid if you have or have had juandice and/or liver impairment.
- Take Macrobid with food.
- Macrobid is not expected to harm the fetus in pregnant women, unless used in the last 2-4 weeks of pregnancy.
Recall
- In May 2009, Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals based in India issued a recall for all current (at the time of recall) Nitrofurantoin capsules due to non-conformance of quality standards. Some of the recalled drugs may cause nausea and gastrointestinal side effects. Ranbaxy recalled all lots during the time of release. This is the generic version of Macrobid. Macrobid Treatment and Use
Macrobid | Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic that is primarily prescribed for urinary tract infection. It is only effective against certain bacterial infections and is ineffective towards viral infections. Macrobid is marketed and manufactured by Almatica Pharma, Inc. It is primarily marketed to post-menopausal women.
What does Macrobid do?
Macrobid works to prevent bacteria from reproducing in the body. It targets Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus bacterias which are often the cause of common urinary tract infections.
Dosage
The typical prescribed dosage for urinary tract infection is 100 mg twice a day for 7 days. It is important to finish the full treatment even if you begin to feel better by the 3rd or 4th day. Macrobid is available in 100 mg capsule form.
