Mevacor | Lovastatin has been shown to cause
common side effects, such as:
- dizziness
- rash
- headache
- nausea
- heartburn
- gas
- diarrhea
- stomach cramps
Mevacor | Lovastatin has also been shown to cause more
serious side effects, such as:
- jaundice
- pain in the upper-right abdomen
- dark urine
- muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness accompanied with fever, which can signify a serious condition known as rhabdomyolysis
- flu-like symptoms
- unexplained tiredness
- pale-colored stools
Immediately alert your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects, or if common side effects persist.
Warnings & Recalls for Mevacor
Patients who suffer from liver disease, or who are pregnant or nursing should not take Mevacor.Mevacor may cause serious conditions such as
myopathy or rhabdomyolsis, which are characterized by unexplained muscle pain or weakness. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking this medication, stop taking Mevacor and alert your doctor immediately.Liver problems have been known to occur while using Mevacor, although this occurrence is rare. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- dark urine
- pale-colored stools
- severe, persistent nausea
- loss of appetite
- stomach pain
- unusual tiredness
- jaundice
Mevacor Treatment and Use
Mevacor | Lovastatin is a statin medication manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc. as a an oral tablet. Mevacor works by blocking certain enzymes in the liver which are responsible for the production or cholesterol. This decreases the overall production of cholesterol by the liver, and lowers cholesterol levels in the blood.
Mevacor | Lovastatin is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions when used with diet and exercise:
- Reducing LDL, or “bad”, cholesterol
- Raising HDL, or “good”, cholesterol
Mevacor | Lovastatin is also indicated to reduce the risks of the following conditions:
- Unstable angina | lack of blood or oxygen flow to the heart
- Heart attack
- Certain kinds of heart surgeries, such as coronary revascularization procedures
Mevacor Dosage
Adult patients:
- Recommended starting dosage of 20 mg/daily, with the maximum recommended dose being 80 mg/daily
- Recommended range of 10-80 mg/daily in single or divided doses
- Adjustments may be made at intervals of 4 weeks or more
Adolescent patients (10-17 years of age):
- Recommended individualized dosing range of 10-40 mg/daily, with the dosage not to exceed 40 mg/daily
- Adjustments may be made at intervals of 4 weeks or more
Do not take more than your prescribed dose, and consult your doctor before taking any other medications with Mevacor. Failure to comply may result in an overdose of this medication.
