Mitoxantrone hydrochloride Serious Side Effects
- Cardiac effects such as fast, slow, or uneven heart rate
- Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms, easy bruising or bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding gums), loss of appetite, mouth sores, unusual weakness
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as severe or ongoing nausea; diarrhea; black, bloody, or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- Respiratory side effects such as shortness of breath, trouble breathing or chest pain or tightness
- Urination changes such as urinating more or less than usual or experiencing pain or burning when you urinate;
- Weight changes such as swelling, rapid weight gain
- Dermatologic side effects such as skin changes where the medicine was injected
Less serious side effects of Mitoxantrone hydrochloride
- mild nausea, diarrhea or constipation
- heartburn or stomach pain
- hair loss;
- heavy menstrual bleeding or missed menstrual periods
- runny nose
- tiredness
- depression
- blue-green colored urine or a bluish color of the whites of the eyes for a few days after each dose

Family Planning Warnings
This drug is a Pregnancy category D drug and may cause birth defects if either the male or female is taking it at the time of conception or during pregnancy. This drug is known to pass into breast milk and may be harmful to the infant. Nursing mothers should make the decision to either discontinue the drug or discontinue breastfeeding.
General Warnings
Patients are advised to notify their doctors before taking this drug if they have any of the following conditions:
- An allergy to this medication or any of its ingredients
- Heart problems such as heart disease, congestive heart failure or other heart issues
- Low blood cell counts
- Gout
- Liver disease (including hepatitis)
- Infections
- Multiple sclerosis

Mitoxantrone hydrochloride Dosage
Mitoxantrone hydrochloride is administered intravenously by medical professionals.
MS: 12 mg/m² administered as an IV infusion approximately 5 to 15 minutes every 3 months
Prostate Cancer: 12 mg/m² administered as an IV infusion every 3 weeks
Acute Nonlymphocytic Leukemia: 12 mg/m² daily on days 1-3 of initial therapy administered through an IV, along with 100 mg/m² of cytarabine given as a continuous 24-hour infusion on Days 1-7.
