- There is an increased risk of wrist, hip, and spine fractures in elderly patients or those suffering from osteoporosis, particularly when using the Delayed-Release Oral Suspension.
- The U.S. Food & Drug Administration is currently reviewing medications classified as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to confirm whether or not they heighten the risk of Clostridium difficile- associated diarrhea (CDAD). Clostridium difficile is a bacteria that causes diarrhea that does not improve, and is characterized by watery stool, abdominal pain, and fever.

Nexium | Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication manufactured by AstraZeneca can be taken either as a delayed-release capsule or delayed-release oral suspension. Nexium works to by inhibiting proton pumps found in cells that produce acid in the lining of the stomach.
Nexium is approved for the treatment and prevention of
- Gasto-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heartburn
- Ulcers that form from usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Diseases that cause over-production of stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Damage of the esophagus caused by erosive esophagitis
Nexium can also be used with antibiotics to rid the digestive system of the Heliobacter pylori bacteria to heal peptic ulcers and prevent their occurrence.
