The most serious adverse side effects from taking Permax have been attributed to heart problems in patients known to have taken this drug. Some more serious side effects have included cardiac fibrosis which is a form of heart disease and heart valve damage that are all adverse effects which can lead to death.

There are certain preconditions that hinder success in patients with the following symptoms or disorders:
- Renal fibrosis
- Inflammation of the covering of the heart or the pericardium
- Fluid in the covering of the heart or the pericardium
- Heart valve disease
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Blood pressure dropping upon standing
- Pleurisy
- Presence of fluid into the lungs
- Retroperitoneal fibrosis
- Kidney disease
- A mother who’s lactating and breastfeeding
- Thickening of the lining of the lung
As of 2007, there has been a voluntary recall by Eli Lilly & Co regarding this product which had been announced by the FDA.
Permax Treatment and Use
Permax | Pergolide is a drug that has been discontinued in the US after a voluntary recall by the manufacturers Eli Lilly & Co, which had been announced by the FDA in 2007. Its use has not been discontinued in all countries however. Permax had originally been introduced into the market as a prescription for Parkinson’s disease in 1989. Permax is an ergoline-based dopamine receptor agonist which can also be used to treat hyperprolactinemia, restless leg syndrome and Cushing’s syndrome in horses.
