Severe Side Effects of Pletal
- Consult your doctor right away if you have irregular heartbeats, bloody or painful urination and severe headaches. High fever, chills, body aches or other flu-like symptoms are also severe.
- Seek emergency medical attention for rashes, troubled breathing, and swelling in the arms, hands, legs or feet. These may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
- The following symptoms are rare, but potentially very serious: easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat, black or bloody stools, extreme body aches, fainting spells, changes in vision, slurred speech and weakness on one side of the body.

Black Box Warning About Pletal
- Patients who have taken medications that are similar to Pletal have had increased risk of death due to congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart is incapable of pumping enough blood to the other parts of the body. Your doctor will most likely not prescribe Pletal to you if you have ever had congestive heart failure.
General Warnings
- Do not take Pletal if you have ulcers, internal bleeding or blood platelet deficiencies.
- Talk to your doctor if you have had heart, kidney or liver disease, or are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, Biaxin | clarithromycin, aspirin, erythromycin, any form of warfarin, any form of diltiazem, anti-fungal medications or anti-platelet medications such as Plavix and Ticlid. You should also avoid popular drugs like Prozac, Luvox, Prilosec and Zoloft.
- Pletal may cause dizziness. After taking Pletal, be careful when operating road vehicles or heavy machinery.
Pletal Treatment and Use
Pletal | Cilostazol is a platelet aggregation inhibitor that reduces the symptoms of intermittent claudication, a condition that causes aggravating leg pain during walking and exercising. It is manufactured by the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. (OPC) and was approved for use by the FDA in 1999.
How does Pletal work?
Pletal works by decreasing blood platelet coagulation which improves blood flow to one’s legs.
Dosage
Pletal comes in a 100 milligram tablet form that is administered by mouth. It is usually taken twice per day, at least 30 minutes before or two hours after breakfast and dinner. Patients are advised to take Pletal at the same times every day.
Although you may notice improvements in your condition after two to four weeks, it may take up to 12 weeks to fully benefit from Pletal. It is important to keep taking Pletal even if you feel well.
Speak with your physician before discontinuing your dosages of Pletal. Taking Pletal with grapefruit or grapefruit juice may increase your likelihood of developing dangerous side effects. Your doctor may advise you to not ingest grapefruit products while taking Pletal.
