Severe side effects of Prezista
- Prezista has caused acute hepatitis in some patients.
- A few patients have experienced potentially fatal skin reactions such as while taking Prezista.
- Hemophilia or severe bleeding may occur.
- Prezista may cause an onset of or worsen Diabetes.
- Increased body fat, obesity, and breast enlargement may occur while taking Prezista.
- Prezista may cause anorexia.
Common side effects of Prezista
- Gastrointestinal side effects include upset stomach, loose stools, and vomiting.
- Prezista may cause the nasal passages to become inflamed (nasopharyngitis).
- Abnormal dreams have been reported from some patients taking Prezista.

Why was Prezista recalled?
- On November 26th, 2008, Advantage Dose LLC issued a recall for Prezista, Darunavir Ethanolate 300 mg tablets due to failure to comply with current good manufacturing practices. The recalled lot was manufactured by JOM Pharmaceuticals and the recall number is D-1075-2009. The recalled manufacturing lot number is 8GG615 and the expiration date is 09/16/09. Warnings
- Prezista must be taken with ritonavir for proper treatment of HIV.
- Since Prezista can cause severe liver damage, the patient should get routine blood tests to monitor levels. See the FDA safety warning here.
- Prezista is a class C pregnancy drug and is potentially hazardous to take during pregnancy.
- Tell your doctor before taking Prezista if you have a sulfa allergy.
- Statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) such as Zocor should not be taken with Prezista.
- Antifungal medications such as Diflucan may decrease the effectiveness of Prezista or cause adverse effects.
- Do not take Prezista with St. John's wort as this supplement will make the medication less effective.
- There are many drugs that are dangerous to take during Prezista treatment. These include anti-seizure medications, migraine medicines, antihistamines, heart medications, medications for enlarged prostate, and proton pump inhibitors.
Prezista Treatment and Use
Prezista | Darunavir is a protease inhibitor that is used to reduce the spread of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency virus). Prezista is always prescribed with Norvir (ritonavir) and the two must be taken together. Prezista is marketed by Tibotec Therapeutics and Janssen Pharmeceuticals. It was approved for sale in 2006.
How does Prezista work?
Prezista helps to fight the development of HIV by slowing the increase of the virus and targeting certain protease enzymes that cause the virus to multiply.
Dosage
Prezista is available in 75 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, 300 mg, 400 mg, and 600 mg tablets. It is also available in a 100 mg/ml oral suspension primarily for pediatric patients. The initial dosage for Prezista is 400 mg twice a day along with 100 mg of Norvir (ritonavir) once a day with food.
