Prinzide (Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide) Side Effects
Although uncommon,
Prinzide may cause
serious adverse side effects. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:
- Angiodema, a swelling similar to hives which occurs beneath the surface of the skin and may inflame the eyes and mouth, while also causing difficulty breathing
- Hyperkalemia or an elevated level of potassium may be caused by the use of Prinzide. Although typically only mild cases are reported, Hyperkalemia can affect the body in many ways including weakening muscles and causing irregular heart rythms. If left untreated, Hyperkalemia may even result in death.
- Heart palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
- Hypo-tension or low blood pressure often causing lightheadedness or fainting, also known medically as syncope
- Allergic reactions such as rashes, itchiness and swelling of the tongue, face or throat causing troubled breathing
- Signs of infection including fever, sore throat and chlls
- Severe stomach and/or abdominal pain, and muscle cramps or weakness
- Jaundice such as yellowing of the eyes and skin, and decrease in vision or pain in eyes which may be signs of future liver failure
- Irregularity in urination such as a decrease in urination or darkened urine
- Symptoms of low blood sodium including confusion or seizures
While adjusting to Prinzide, common side effects include:
- Drowsiness and faintness
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Dry coughing
- Nausea

In
June of 2012 the US Food and Drug Administration approved information about Prinzide as a
black box warning indicating that this hypertension medication may cause harm or even death to developing fetus in expectant women.According to the FDA, Prinzide may lead variations in the
renal function as the
glomerular filtration rate (GFI) through the kidney may be altered or even cause the kidney to fail. Hydrochlorothiazide found in Prinzide may also cause
acute transient myopia and
acute angle-closure glaucoma.Before taking Prinzide, let your doctor know if you have:
- Diabetes
- Liver or heart disease
- Kidney disease or kidney failure
- A history of angiodemia
- Pancreatitis
- Asthma
- High cholesterol
- Any allergies to Prinzide or any angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or preservative
Do
not take Prinzide if you:
- Are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breastfeeding
- Are on dialysis
- Drink alcohol frequently
- Will be undergoing anesthesia
- Are taking Dofetilide or Ketanserin
If you are taking Prinzide check your blood pressure regularly and be aware of any abnormalities you may have.

How Does Prinzide Work?
Prinzide lowers blood pressure by loosening the width of blood vessels with the use of Lisinopril, allowing blood to flow more steadily throughout the body. This accounts for a more efficient flow of blood through the heart. Simultaneously, Hydrochlorothiazide reduces liquid retention by allowing the kidneys to remove excess water and salts from the body while depositing these unnecessary fluids into the urine.
Prinzide Dosage For High Blood Pressure
- Either Prinzide 10mg/12.5mg or 20mg/12.5mg should be taken by mouth once daily or as prescribed by your doctor.
- Dosage may fluctuate depending on the patients response to Prinzide or side effects due to this drug.
- Patients with other medical conditions or patients who are taking other medications may be prescribed different dosages.
- It may take many weeks to see full results in lowering blood pressure using Prinzide.

- Prinzide is to be taken once daily by mouth with water and with or without food.
