Provigil | modafinil is an analeptic drug currently made by the American company Cephalon. It is indicated by the FDA for the treatment of:
Off-label, Provigil is used to treat:
- Depression
- Bi-polar disorder
- Drug dependency
- Parkinson’s disease
- Fatigue, and
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
How does Provigil work?
It is unknown precisely how Provigil | modafinil works, but it is believed that this drug increases the release of catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine and this promotes increased wakefulness in those that use it.
Although many would think of a drug that helps individuals stay awake to be similar to caffeine or other stimulants, researchers mostly believe that it is only partially a stimulant and is more of a “wakefulness promoting agent”.
Provigil dosing
- Provigil comes in tablet form and is to be taken once daily with or without food.
- For narcolepsy or sleep apnea, the usual recommended dose of Provigil is 200 mg per day.
- For shift work disorder, the usual recommended dose of Provigil is 100 mg per day t be taken about an hour before the start of the individual’s work shift.
- Certain populations, such as the elderly and those with liver disease may have a lower dose recommended.
