- fever
- muscle pain
- joint pain
- flu like symptoms
- atrial fibrillation : a disorder in which the two upper chambers of the heart quiver instead of beating in an organized and efficient manner.
- osteonecrosis of the jaw : death of bone tissue in the jaw that causes malformation and chronic pain. Though this condition is rare, according to the Bone and Cancer Foundation, most new cases have been attributed to cancer patients being treated with biphosphates.

Warnings & Recalls for Reclast
- Tell your doctor about any food or drug allergies that you have before beginning treatment with Reclast, as well as any medications you may be taking.
- Reclast is contraindicated in patients with renal failure. Tell your doctor about kidney problems before being treated with Reclast.
- Long-term use of biphosphonates may increase your risk of atypical femural fractures.
- Because of the possibility of low blood calcium due to taking Reclast, calcium and vitamin D supplementation is recommended.

Reclast | zoledronic acid is an annual injection used to treat osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. It is also used to treat Paget’s disease of the bone as well as osteoporosis in men. Reclast is also approved to prevent and treat osteoporosis in women who have reached menopause who have been treated with glucocorticoid steroids such as prednisone.
Common side effects of Relcast include flu-like symptoms, fever, and muscle pain. More serious side effects of Reclast include atrial fibrillation (see Reclast found to cause abnormal heart rhythms)and osteonecrosis. Read our “side effects” tab for more information.
How does Reclast work?
Reclast is a bisphosphonate medication. These types of drugs slow the rate at with bones break down by binding to certain cells. This strengthens bones in those with osteoporosis, or slows the rate at which the disorder progresses.
Reclast dosage
Reclast is an intravenous injection that should be administered by a trained healthcare provider in a clinical setting. The recommended doses are as follows:
- For treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women: 5 mg per year
- For treatment of osteoporosis in men: 5 mg per year
- For prevention of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women: 5 mg per year
It is recommended that you take vitamin D and calcium after you’ve been treated with Reclast. This will help prevent low blood calcium.
