Thimerosal | Thiomersal is an established antiseptic and antifungal agent which is derived from a organomercury compound. The pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly & Co. have given thimerosal the trade name Merthiolate and its been used as a preservative for in vaccines, immunoglobulin preparations, skin test antigens, tattoo inks, ophthalmic and nasal products, and antivenins. Its use as a preservative in vaccines is very controversial and its being phased out from vaccines that children routinely get in the US, the EU and other countries. It is 49.6% mercury by weight and the structure of thimerosal is metabolized into ethylmercury and thiosalicylate. In multidose injectable vaccines, thimerosal prevents serious side effects such as the Staphylococcus infection.
