Tobradex is not known to cause any adverse reactions. However, if any symptoms become severe or are persistent,
contact your healthcare provider immediately to reduce the risk of injuries to the eye, vision loss or new infections. In rare cases, Tobradex may cause an
allergic reaction. Symptoms may include:
- inflammation of the throat, tongue, mouth, face or eyes
- hoarseness or trouble breathing
- redness and itching of the skin
- breakouts of hives

Tobradex and Pregnancy
Tobradex is an FDA pregnancy Category C medicine and therefore it is unknown whether or not it may cause harm to an unborn child. Sufficient studies have not been conducted to determine if Tobradex may pass through breastmilk. Consult your doctor before taking Tobradex if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
General Warnings
Be sure to tell your doctor about any other medications or you are taking or if you wear contact lenses; do not use any other eye medications without notifying your doctor. Tobradex can interact with other drugs, especially corticosteroids. Ask your doctor if Tobradex is right for you if you are currently using a corticosteroid. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Tobradex. Contacts may be replaced 15 minutes after using Tobradex. Patients should be aware that Tobradex may cause changes to vision which may affect your ability to see properly.
Tobradex Treatment and Use
Tobradex | Tobramycin and dexamethasone opthalmic is a brand name antibiotic marketed by Alcon for treating and reducing symptoms of optic bacterial infections. Tobradex contains a mixture of tobramycin a aminoglycoside and dexamethasone a corticosteroid medicine to effectively kill bacteria.
Tobradex is only for infections caused by bacteria, not fungal or viral infections.
How Does Tobradex Work?
Tobradex works by decreasing swelling, redness inflammatory responses to infections through the ingredient tobramycin. Dexamethasone fights bacteria and prevents the spread of bacteria. This helps to end the infection and reduce the risk of developing a new infections associated which may be caused with the reduction of inflammation.
How to Use Tobradex
Tobradex comes in the form of liquid eye drops or ointment. Before applying Tobradex, wash your hands thoroughly to prevent further infection. To use Tobradex eye drops:
- shake the liquid slowly to mix the solution completely
- while leaning your head back, pull the lower eyelid down using your index finger
- look upwards and lightly squeeze one drop into the eye
- close the eye then gently press the inner section of the eye (tear duct)
- repeat if your prescription requires more than one drop
For Tobradex ointment:
- tilt your head backwards so that you are looking at the ceiling and pull down on the lower eyelid
- gently squeeze a small layer of ointment into the lower lid
- close the eye and move your eye around for about 60 seconds
To avoid contamination, do not allow the eye dropper come in contact with any surface. Tobradex should only be used as prescribed by your doctor; do not use any amount different than instructed. If you have been prescribed other eye solutions, wait at least 10 minutes to use these products after applying Tobradex.
