Warnings & Recalls for Trovan
- Measurable amounts of Trovan have been found in lactating mothers who were concurrantly being treated with the antibiotic. Large scale studies have not been conducted on the effects of trovafloxacin on infants.
- Taking antacids up to a half an hour before taking Trovan | trovafloxacin may result in reduced efficacy of the drug.
- Trovan has been associated with serious liver impairments that may necessitate transplant and in some cases lead to death.
- Patients with severe cirrhosis have not been evaluated for tolerance of Trovan.
- In a drug safety communication by the FDA in 2009, it was revealed that Trovan would no longer be available in the United States except under certain rare circumstances.
Trovan Treatment and Use
Trovan | trovafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone broad spectrum antibiotic in the same medication family as Tequin and Levaquin. Trovafloxacin is sold by Pfizer as Trovan and by Laboratorios Almirall as Turvel and was introduced to the market in 1998.
In 1996, during an outbreak of meningitis, Pfizer tested Trovan on over one hundred children in the Nigerian state of Kano. Eleven children died as a result of the trial and Pfizer found itself as the defendant in a lawsuit that culminated in a 2007 settlement with the Nigerian government that Reuters reported in “Nigeria, Pfizer settle Trovan lawsuit” to be $75 million.
Trovan | trovafloxacin comes in 100 mg and 200 mg tablets to be taken once a day orally, and on an empty stomach.
This drug is no longer available in the United States except in very rare and life-threatening instances.
