Viokase and Pregnancy
Viokase is an FDA
pregnancy Category C medicine. The effects of Viokase on the fetus if taken during pregnancy are unknown. It has not been determined if Viokase passes through the breast-milk or may harm a nursing baby.
Before using Viokase, let your doctor know if you are
pregnant,
may become pregnant, or are
breastfeeding.
General Warnings
Viokase
should not be used by anyone who is
allergic to pork (pig) proteins or any of the ingredients found in Viokase, or anyone who has
pancreatitis (swelling of the pancreas).
To determine if Viokase is safe for you to use, be sure to tell your doctor about
any of the following conditions you may have:
- any allergies you may have
- gout or abnormally high amounts of uric acid in the body
- if you have ever had kidney disease or a kidney disorder
- any pancreatic disorders
- any stomach or bowel obstructions or problems
- breathing disorders such as asthma
Ask your doctor which medicines could
interact with Viokase. It is important to let your healthcare provider know about
all medications you are using while taking Viokase.
Patients should use caution while taking Viokase and performing any tasks that require alertness. Viokase may impair your functions and cause you to become
dizzy.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Viokase.
Taking Viokase in large amounts or for an extended period of time may increase the risk of developing
fibrosing colonopathy. See "

Viokase Treatment and Use
Viokase| Pancrelipase is an enzyme replacement treatment marketed by Aptalis Pharma for maintaining healthy levels of digestive enzymes in patients with cystic fibrosis or chronic pancreatitis. Viokase was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on March 2, 2012, along with Ultresa, as the fifth pancreatic enzyme medicine to meet FDA standards.
How Does Viokase Work?
Viokase works by balancing enzymes in the digestive system. Viokase replenishes a combination of enzymes and aids the body in digesting proteins, starches, and fats.
How to Take Viokase
Viokase comes in powder, capsule, and tablet form to be taken by mouth. Viokase is generally taken with food and a glass of water. Take Viokase as prescribed by your doctor. Tablets should be taken whole and should not be broken or chewed. Ask your doctor about mixing the contents of Viokase capsules with a soft food if you have trouble swallowing the capsule.
The dosage amount of Viokase depends on your medical condition. Follow any instructions given to you by your doctor about how to take Viokase.
