- Zometa can cause an increased risk for breaking thigh bones in people using this medication for osteoporosis. Tell your doctor is you experience aches in your hips, groin, or thighs.
- Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has occurred in cancer patients treated with Zometa. The likelihood of suffering from ONJ is increased with the usage of other medications, and you should consult your healthcare physician before combining any drugs with Zometa.
- Zometa should not be used by patients who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding. This mediation could be potentially dangerous to newborns or unformed fetuses.
Zometa Treatment and Use
Zometa | zoledronic acid is a biphosphonate medication manufactured by Novartis as an injectable solution. Zometa slows the deterioration of bones, increases bone density, and minimizes the levels of calcium released into the blood by the bones.
Zometa | zoledronic acid has been approved for the treatment of
- Osteoporosis in women who have experienced menopause
- Osteoporosis in men and women who are currently taking glucocorticoid medications that may cause osteoporosis
- High calcium levels in the blood caused by certain cancers
- Bone damage resulting from from multiple myeloma in conjunction with chemotherapy
Although Zometa is frequently used alongside chemotherapy for the treatment of side effects in certain cancers, it is not a chemotherapy treatment, and does not prevent the growth of cancerous cells.
