These three \u201cblockbuster\u201d drugs are <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aranesp<\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Procrit<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Epogen<\/span><\/strong>: three anemia drugs, whose benefits were said to include \u201chappiness and satisfaction in life\u201d, but these results, according to research, have been incredibly overstated, and their potentially lethal side effects- which include <strong>stroke<\/strong>, <strong>cancer<\/strong>, and an increased risk of <strong>death-\u00a0<\/strong>have been overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>2011<\/strong>, researchers from Medicare issued a study that declared there was <strong>no evidence<\/strong> that these\u00a0<strong>anemia drugs<\/strong> had improved <strong>kidney patients\u2019<\/strong> \u201clife satisfaction\u201d, happiness, chances of survival, or even helped them feel better. In fact, the only \u201cclinical benefits\u201d were an elevated statistic for red blood cell count. The massive sales of these drugs were based entirely on \u201cfalse promises\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Epogen, Procrit, and Aranesp are <strong>erythopoisis<\/strong>-stimulating agents, a.k.a <strong>ESAs<\/strong>, which are a bioengineered version of natural proteins made in the kidney that stimulate the bone marrow <strong>to produce<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>red<\/strong> <strong>blood<\/strong> <strong>cells<\/strong>. These drugs are used primarily to treat patients with <strong>chronic<\/strong> <strong>kidney<\/strong> <strong>disease<\/strong>\u00a0who suffer from anemia, but have also been approved to treat anemia in <strong>cancer<\/strong> <strong>patients<\/strong> who are undergoing <strong>chemotherapy<\/strong>.\u00a0The drugs\u2019 use has also been expanded over time to treat dialysis patients, patients who suffer from AIDS and cancer, and even patients undergoing knee or hip surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amgen<\/strong> and <strong>Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/strong>, the makers of this trio of anemia drugs, have seen sales of <strong>$8 billion per year, <\/strong>ranking them as best-sellers for <em>years<\/em>. They have been the most expensive medications covered by Medicare, annually.<\/p>\n<p>So how can these drugs, based on fraudulent claims, rake in so much money every year? A doctor must administer the drugs. Because of this, physicians are able to charge much more for the drugs than the price they paid for them. Even worse is that Amgen and Johnson &amp; Johnson offer discounts to doctors that dispense the medications in large volumes, resulting in more incentive for physicians to administer high doses of this potentially deadly drug to patients.
