Chantix Treatment and Use
Chantix | Varenicline is a drug that’s marketed by Pfizer in the US that’s prescribed to treat smoking addiction. This drug stimulates nicotine receptors much more weaker than nicotine does in the body, so it is a nicotinic receptor partial agonist. In this regard, it is different from other nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) such as nicotine patches or gum. Chantix | Varenicline used in the prescribed manner and dosages usually helps reduce cravings for nicotine and decreases the pleasurable effects of cigarettes and tobacco products. Its official FDA-use indication is referred to as “smoking cessation assistance”.
Chantix | Varenicline has been found to be more effective than NRTs and nicotine agonists such as bupropion. In a 2006 clinical trial that had been randomized by the manufacturing company Pfizer, after a one-year rate, continuous abstinence from smoking had been about 23% compared to other smoking cessation drugs that had registered usually below 20%. FDA-indicated usage has been approved for 12 weeks; this can be doubled if smoking cessation has been achieved as part of a contingency plan for the patient.
It is worth noting however, that Chantix | Varenicline has a “black box” warning initiated by the FDA as a result of this drug having “neuropsychiatric adverse side effects”, which include serious psychiatric side effects such as suicidal thoughts and poor impulse.
