Amoxicillin Treatment and Use
Amoxicillin | Amoxil is a penicillin antibiotic or bacteriolytic marketed by Glaxosmithkline. Amoxicillin treats bacterial infections in the body and may be used to treat symptoms of the following:
- Ear infections
- Bladder infections
- Pneumonia
- Urine infections
- Gonorrhea
- Infections of the lungs (bronchitis)
- Dental infections
- E. coli or salmonella
- Stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori (if used along with other medications)
How Does Amoxicillin Work?
Amoxicillin prevents bacteria from creating cell walls which are used to keep harmful substances from injuring the bacteria. By stopping the cell wall production and allowing for holes in the walls, the bacteria is killed and can no longer spread throughout the body. This process helps to fight and end bacterial infections.
Amoxicillin Dosage Information
Amoxicillin comes in capsule, powder, oral suspension (liquid), or chewable tablet form, with varying concentrations. The dose and frequency depends on the type of infection being treated, along with other factors, such as the patients weight, age and health condition. Typically, Amoxicillin is prescribed to be taken in capsule form:
- three times a day by mouth with a full glass of water
- with or without food (with food to ease stomach aches)
- at an even amount of time between each dose during the day
Do not end treatment earlier than your doctor has prescribed. This can cause the infection to return or allow the bacteria to become resistant to Amoxicillin.
Is Amoxicillin Safe for Children?
Yes, Amoxicillin is safe and recommended for children with bacterial infections, and is given in a pediatric suspension. This medicine should be shaken and measured carefully before administering to a child. Make sure to complete the full course of the prescription to ensure total termination of the infection.
Amoxicillin is not safe for children with allergies to either this medicine or penicillin.
