Pregnancy Warning
Butisol Sodium is a FDA pregnancy Category D medication and should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Butisol Sodium may cause fetal damage if taken by a woman who is pregnant. Butisol Sodium may also be transferred through breast-milk and cause harm a nursing infant.This medication may reduce effectiveness of birth control pills.
General Warnings
Butisol Sodium may be habit-forming. Prolonged use may lead to tolerance, psychological dependence, and eventually physical dependence.Behaviors occurring during sleep have been reported during use of Butisol Sodium. These behaviors, including sleep-driving, are usually accompanied by amnesia. Should this occur, patients are strongly advised to discontinue medication.Patients should consult their doctor if they have a history of any of the following:
- severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), or other breathing disorder
- liver disease
- anemia (lack of red blood cells)
- porphyria
- depression, mental illness, or suicide attempt; or
- drug or alcohol addiction
- allergy to butabarbital, aspirin, or any kind of yellow dye
Interactions
Butisol Sodium should not be combined with the following drugs:
- Sodium oxybate
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Beta-blockers
- Clozapine
- Corticosteroids (eg, prednisone)
- Doxycycline
- Estrogens (eg, micronized estradiol)
- Griseofulvin
- Metronidazole
- Birth control pills
- Phenytoin
- Quinidine
- Theophylline
- Valproic acid

How to take Butisol Sodium
Butisol Sodium comes in tablet form and it’s dosage depends on what it is being prescribed for. As a sedative, Butisol Sodium is prescribed in 15-30 mg doses three to four times daily. As a bed time hypnotic, it is prescribed 50-100 mg before bed. As a preoperative sedative, patients are given 50 to 100 mg about one hour before surgery.
