Serious Side Effects of Mepivacaine
- seizures (convulsions)
- feeling dizzy or light-headed; fainting or becoming unconscious
- prolongued numbness
- feeling restless, agitated or excited
- uncontrolled shaking (tremors)
- nausea and vomiting
- increased heart rate, slow or irregular heartbeat
- chest pain or tension
- redness or itchiness
- extreme fatigue
- perspiration (sweating) and a high body temperature
- changes in vision or hearing; blurry vision
- anxiety or depression
- severe allergic reaction with symptoms of a rash, hives, inflammation of the face, mouth area, lips, tongue or throat, and trouble breathing

- decrease in the desire or ability to perform sexual activities
- muscle weakness
- ringing in the ears
- decrease in urination or defecation, or being unable to urinate or make bowel movements

Mepivacaine and Pregnancy
Mepivacaine has been categorized as an FDA
pregnancy Category C drug. It is
not known if mepivacaine could cause harm to the fetus if taken by a woman who is pregnant. Studies have not been conducted to confirm if mepivacaine passes through breast-milk or may harm a nursing baby.
Consult your doctor before receiving mepivacaine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
General Warnings
Mepivacaine
may not be safe for all patients. Let your doctor know if you:
- are allergic to anything
- take any other medications, supplements or vitamins
- have any swelling, problems or infections at the site where the injection is to be performed
- have a history of heart disorders or disease
- have kidney or liver disease
- have ever had blood problems such as low blood pressure (hypotension) or low blood volume
- are pregnant or breast-feeding
After receiving mepivacaine, patients should use
caution when performing any activity that requires alertness as this medication may decrease motor function and induce dizziness, vision changes or fatigue. Consumption of alcohol or taking other medicines along with mepivacaine may also hinder your ability to think properly or take part in these activities.

- certain types of surgery
- labor
- childbirth
Mepivacaine is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for intra-articular infusions.
