Pulmozyme Treatment and Use
Pulmozyme | Dornase Alfa is a drug that’s been developed by the drug company Genentech. It’s a highly purified solution of recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I (rhDNase), which is an enzyme that selectively latches onto DNA. This drug is used to treat cystic fibrosis in patients, but doesn’t cure it. Pulmozyme | Dornase Alfa hydrolyzes DNA present in the mucus of cystic fibrosis patients and thereby reduces the viscosity of the lungs which in turn promotes improved clearance of secretions. This highly purified solution is derived from Chinese hamster ovary cells.
Pulmozyme | Dornase Alfa comes as a solution to be inhaled through the mouth and taken about once or twice a day.
It is worth noting that in 2008, Pulmozyme | Dornase Alfa had about $257 million dollars worth of revenue.
A 1mg/mL solution of Pulmozyme | Dornase Alfa costs on average about $2150.
