Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin has some serious adverse side effects associated with it, such as:
- Cardiovascular side effects such as chest pain or tightness, weakened pulse, slower heart rate, decrease in blood pressure and spasm of the coronary arteries
- Neurological side effects such as confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, fainting and disorientation
- Psychiatric side effects such as abnormal behavior and hallucinations
- Respiratory side effects such as labored breathing and respiratory depression

Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin has more common and less severe adverse side effects such as:
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as upset stomach, vomiting, nausea and constipation
- Dermatological side effects such as itching, rash, redness of the skin, warmth underneath skin and tingling
There is a chance for overdose with this drug. Patients must use discretion at all times, especially with the care of children who happen to be prescribed this drug.
Robitussin DAC Treatment and Use
Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin is a drug that is an exempt narcotic cold medicine which comes in the form of a liquid solution in the United States. There is a version of Cheratussin available that comes without the pseudoephedrine called Robitussin AC. Under the guidelines of US federal law, up to four ounces of Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin can be purchased within a day period without prescription, granted that the purchaser is at least 18 years old, signs a log book, and provides ID if that person isn’t known to the pharmacist. But many states do prohibit sales of this drug without a prescription or they have certain restrictions on purchasing it. In the state of New Jersey, the law dictates that a person can’t purchase any more than 4 four ounce bottles within a single year. In states that do allow purchase without a prescription, Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin might still be very difficult to buy as pharmacists use discretion and very commonly deny the sale of the drug.
Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin is indicated to treat acute cough, nasal congestion and mucus buildup. Each 5mL of this drug contains 10mg of codeine, 30mg of pseudoephedrine and 100mg of guaifenesin. Because Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin contains codeine, it is only prescribed when a patient has a persistent and painful cough and one that interferes with the patient’s sleep pattern.
How This Drug Works
Codeine works as an antitussive and is known to depress the medullary cough center. Guaifenesin works as an expectorant. It acts by irritating gastric mucus and stimulating secretion from the GI tract. This in turn decreases the thickness of respiratory fluid. It is worth noting that drinking a glass of water with each dose increases substantially the effectiveness of this medication.
Dosage Information
Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin dosing is dependent upon the severity of each patient’s condition as well as the symptoms.
- For adults, Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin is dispensed 10mL orally within every six hours and should not exceed 40mL in 24 hours
- For children 2-5 years of age, Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin is dispensed 2.5mL orally every six hours and should not exceed 10mL in 24 hours
- For children 6-12 years of age, Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin is dispensed 5 mL orally every 6 hours and should not exceed 20mL in 24 hours
- For children 13 and older, Robitussin DAC | Cheratussin is dispensed 10mL orally every 6 hours and should not exceed 40mL in 24 hours
