The main known contraindication of this drug is hypersensitivity or intolerance to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any component of the formulation of Valacyclovir Hydrochloride.In 1997, the FDA cited the manufacturers of the drug Valtrex for misleading the consuming public about facts about the drug, which in turn led to the commercials being redacted from broadcasting.

Its drug classification is that of a prodrug which is converted in vivo into acyclovir. In the US, its marketed by GlaxoSmithKline under the trade names Valtrex and Zelitrex. As of November of 2009, Valacyclovir has been marketed in a generic form in the US by Ranbaxy Laboratories.
