Viagra Treatment and Use
Viagra | Sildenafil Citrate is a phosphodieterase (PDE) inhibitor medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and, in some cases, pulmonary arterial hypertension. Viagra allows men to experience an erection during sexual activity by inhibiting PDE5, an enzyme which breaks down chemicals that allow blood to flow to the penis. Viagra was originally developed by British scientists, but was then bought by the U.S.-based pharmaceutical company Pfizer, and has been approved for consumption in the U.S. by the FDA since 1998.
Viagra is not a cure for ED and should not be used as protection against sexually transmitted disease or to prevent pregnancy.
How does Viagra work?
When a patient experiences sexual stimulation, the chemical cGMP-specific phosphodieterase type 5 relaxes arteries in the penis and stimulates blood flow, causing the penis to become erect. However, the enzyme PDE5 dissolves cGMP, preventing blood vessels from relaxing and the penis from receiving enough blood to stay erect. By blocking PDE5, Viagra is able to help patients maintain an erection through increased blood flow caused by a build-up of cGMP.
Side Effects of Viagra
Although Viagra effectively inhibits PDE5, it can also affect the enzyme PDE6, which is used in the retina to help with the perception of color. Viagra can also cause a painful, long-lasting erection known as priapism that can last for up to 4 hours or more.
