Warnings & Recalls for Yasmin
Yasmin and other drospirenone and ethinylestradiol contraceptives have been shown to cause an increase in potassium levels in the blood, or
hyperkalemia. This serious medical condition may cause chronic renal failure and should be checked by a physician immediately if it is suspected. Unfortunately, hyperkalemia’s symptoms may be mistaken for Yasmin’s other side effects, so if you suspect that this could be a possibility at all, see your doctor.
Yasmin Treatment and Use
Yasmin | Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol is an oral contraceptive that is a mixture of Drospirenone, also known as progestogen,and is a member of the progestin family of synthetic hormones. Progestins, as the name implies, functions much as the hormone progesterone. These drugs are sold under the brand names Yaz, Yasmine, Ocella, Gianvi, Zarah, Syeda, and Loryna.
Drospirenone, together with ethinyl estradiol are used in oral contraceptives (birth control pills) sold under the aforementioned brand names. In 2003, the FDA released a warning letter to the maker of some of the drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol oral contraceptives, then Berlex Laboratories (now Bayer pharmaceuticals) in an FDA safety alert: Birth Control Pills Containing Drospirenone: Possible Increased Risk of Blood Clots. The drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol side effect warning cautioned consumers of a possible “1.5 fold increase” in blood clots for women who use the drug.

CurrentMulti-District Litigation: (August 2013) More than 11,000 Yasmin/Yaz lawsuits have been consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation in the U.S. District Court of Southern Illinois.Award: (February 2013) Bayer has settled approximately 4,800 Yasmin lawsuits for more that $1 billion. Victims who have suffered gall bladder injuries have been compensated $2,000 and those whose gall bladders were removed will receive $3,000.Lawsuit: (March 2013) A woman from Arizona filed a lawsuit after suffering blood clots and pulmonary embolism while using Yasmin birth control pill.
FutureTrial: (October 2013) Yasmin/Yaz trials have been postponed from October 2013 to January 2014. The Multi-District Litigation court has ordered parties to continue mediation in an attempt to reach settlements with plaintiffs.
Far PastTrial: (December 2012) The first set Yasmin trial was delayed by presiding Judge Herndon, under orders that the parties engage in mediation in an attempt to negotiate litigation settlements.FDA Order: (July 2003) The FDA warns Berlex Laboratories (Bayer's predecessor) that their Yasmin commercials violated federal laws.
