Warnings & Recalls for Zemplar
- Poisoning by the heart medication known as Digitalis
- Abnormal amount of phosphate in blood
- Abnormal amount of calcium in blood (Hypercalcemia)
- Abnormal amount of Vitamin D in the body
- Allergy to Vitamin D
Although there hasn’t been a recall by the FDA or a voluntary recall by Abbott Laboratories regarding Zemplar, in April of 2011, the FDA had to update safety labeling changes for the drug which included contraindications and adverse side effects.
Zemplar Treatment and Use
Zemplar | Paricalcitol is a drug that is marketed by Abbott Laboratories and is used for the treatment and prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism which is associated chronic renal failure in stages 3, 4, and 5. Zemplar acts as an antagonist for vitamin D receptor and lowers the blood parathyroid hormone levels in patients who are prescribed this drug. Zemplar comes in the form of an injection and is usually prescribed to geriatric patients older than 65.
